Carinthia

Carinthia, definitely incomparable to ordinary Austria. The region carries the highest sunshine duration, boasts numerous lakes filled with crystal clear water, magnificent ski resorts and luxurious spa’s. Neighbouring countries like Italy and Slovenia bring Mediterranean influences to this Austrian region, noticeable in the Carinthian cuisine, nature and climate.

Haus Hoen is situated on a steep mountain in the tiny village of Untertweng. The two lively villages Radenthein (at a 2 km distance) and Bad Kleinkirchheim (at a 5 km distance) are both located close to Untertweng.

Right down the road, you will find the well-known SHILLING beer brewery and the Gartenrast restaurant, a traditional place specialized in chicken.

Nockberge; the jewel of Carinthia

Soft, dome-like summits are the characteristics of the Nock mountains. In 2012, the most interesting and highest mountain range of Europe was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Carinthia decided to not establish ski resorts on the Nock mountains. This leaves the national park a recreation area that is perfect for trained hikers and families.

The 1200 lakes of Carinthia

A quick dip in the warm water during summertime or a nice picnic at the lakeside, Carinthia owns countless lakes to enjoy a nice morning or afternoon at. The closest and biggest lake to Untertweng is the Millstätter See. The Wörthersee is the biggest lake of Carinthia and one of the warmest lakes of the entire Alps. It is one of the most popular lakes of the country and because of the fine line particles, the water consists of a beautiful bright turquoise color.

Cities to visit

Villach and Klagenfurt belong to the closest big cities. It will take about half an hour to drive to Villach and a 55-minute drive to Klagenfurt. Close to Villach, you will find a specific spot on the border where the three adjacent countries (Italy, Austria and Slovenia) meet each other. Klagenfurt is Carinthia’s capital city and is perfect for a day of sightseeing, shopping and having dinner.

The Carinthian cuisine

Kärntner Nudeln, freshly caught trout from the local pond, an extensive Brettljause or one of the many delicious pastries. One thing for sure, the Carinthian cuisine contains of a lot of fresh, unprocessed foods and is highly influenced by the Slovenian and Italian culture. We promise, Carinthia won’t let you down!
