Environment and what to do

Carinthia

Carinthia cannot be compared to the rest of Austria. The region gets the most sunshine hours, there are several lakes with crystal-clear water, fantastic ski resorts and luxury spas. Neighboring countries like Italy and Slovenia bring Mediterranean influences to this Austrian region, noticeable in the Carinthian cuisine, nature, and the climate.

Haus Hoen is located on a steep mountain in the small village of Untertweng. The two lively villages of Radenthein (2 km away) and Bad Kleinkirchheim (5 km away) are not far from Untertweng.

On the same road is the well-known SHILLING brewery and the Gartenrast restaurant, an authentic restaurant specializing in chicken dishes.

Nockberge; the pearl of Carinthia

Soft, dome-like peaks are characteristic of the Nock Mountains. In 2012, the most interesting and highest mountain range in Europe was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Carinthia has decided not to allow ski resorts in the Nock Mountains. As a result, the national park is a recreational area that is perfect for experienced hikers and families.

The 1200 lakes of Carinthia

A quick dip in the warm water on a lovely summer day or a delicious picnic on the shore of a lake: Carinthia has countless lakes where you can spend a pleasant morning or afternoon. The largest lake near Untertweng is the Millstätter See. The closest is the Brennsee, a true watersports lake with a delightful public beach. The Wörthersee is the largest lake in Carinthia and one of the warmest lakes in the Alps. It is one of the most popular lakes in the country and, due to the fine calcium carbonate particles, the water has a beautiful, bright turquoise color.

Cities worth visiting

Villach and Klagenfurt are two of the closest major cities. Villach is about a half-hour drive away, and Klagenfurt is a 55-minute drive. Near Villach, you'll find the tripoint where the borders of three countries (Italy, Austria, and Slovenia) meet. Klagenfurt is the capital of Carinthia and is perfect for a day of sightseeing, shopping, and dining out. Another recommendation is the fortress town and artists' village of Gmünd. With its many restaurants, ateliers, and old fort, it's worth a visit.

Activities around Haus Hoen

Within a radius of 30 km, there are countless activities for young and old to enjoy. From active walks and sports (climbing, cycling, MTB, bobsleighing) in the mountains to relaxing moments at the lakes and villages such as swimming, cycling, stand-up paddling, etc. With the Carinthia Card, you can enjoy most activities and lifts for free or at a reduced rate. It is highly recommended to purchase this card upon arrival.

  The Carinthian kitchen

Carinthian noodles, freshly caught trout from local waters, a generous Brettljause (platter of cold cuts and cheese) or one of the many delicious pastries. One thing is certain: the Carinthian cuisine is packed with fresh, unprocessed products and is strongly influenced by Slovenian and Italian food culture. We guarantee that Carinthia will not disappoint! Within walking distance from Haus Hoen are two restaurants known for their chicken, schnitzel and noodle dishes.
